Chain-stitched kilims are a traditional rug/soft furnishings making technique from Kashmir. As people sat on the floor they were both homewares and decoration. As many artworks are painted on the ground or 3D surfaces/bodies most of the images do not have a set orientation so can also be hung portrait or landscape if preferred.

Artist: Nami Kulyuru

Design story: Two Women
This story is of two women camping. They have digging sticks looking for bush food. They are travelling on foot around Australia – through sand hills and mountains looking for mai (food). They were travelling from Western Australia to Wamitja (Birthday Creek), close to Ernabella. When the ladies get to Wamitja they camp there the night. In the morning they see a man by himself sleeping on the top of a mountain. The ladies hit the man and roll him to a cave and hide his body. They keep travelling towards Ayers Rock. Nami says this is her mother’s story – a very big story. Nami paints the parts of the story she has been taught.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

Can be ironed (on the woollen side of the rug) on a wool steam setting. For a big rug it’s easiest done on the floor.
